Kaplowitz Reads Kaplowitz 2/28/17

B"H
Welcome to the new VIDEO format of KrK. These will be recorded via Facebook Live at my Have You Kaplowitz'd Today? page then uploaded to YouTube, finally to be embedded here at the xyz. Live happens in 'round the 10am PST hour, xyz happens at the normally scheduled 6pm PST.

This go was over a verily nice Brentley's Limited 10th in a Robusto format.
Regardless of what I stated in the video:
w. Sumata Maduro
b. Criollo 98
f. Honduran, Nicaraguan
In fairness to moi -- I didn't have a "Nicaraguan experience," and past the recorded point, a Honduran robustly toasted earthiness doth did set in. Full review, as mentioned, is coming nigh off another offering.

Give a listen, gentlepersons? Please press play below to do-so.

February 2017 Pound for Pound Boxing Rankings

B"H
Below are my boxing rankings for the month of February 2017. Hey, thanks for reading, gentlepersons. For yer doing-so, I shall try really hard to remember to include these posts in my Kaplowitz Radio audio endeavors. Arturo Fuente Anejo Reserva No. 888 - Cigar Review

B"H
THE CIGAR
Arturo Fuente
Anejo Reserva No. 888 Tres Ochos
6 5/8 x 44 Lonsdale Torpedo
w. Maduro Connecticut Broadleaf
b./f. Dominican
m. Tabacalera Fuente, DR
K A P L O W I T Z SCALE
construction
k a p l o W i t z
I love a Lonsdale. Lesser-so a Torpedo, but OK. This 'un has an opened cap, how interesting. I know, not construction proper, but the band is a bit crooked. Hand-feel of a slender branch, same firmness and texture of such, -- even color. Veins begin a bit unevenly-hewn, but tighten nigh immediately post-light. Only a singular vein is veiny 'nuff to bear mention -- running vertically along the shaft, not broad nor crimped. Toothy as the day is long; toothy as a game-show host... toothy as... etc., etc. A sipping not slurping sorta draw, a powerful wispiness. A sinewy thing. -Full resistance there. I cut again. Again. Good. Medium+. Draw tightens again at end of 2/3 -- I roll it in my mitt and it relaxes again. Dark already shaft, darkens more as it oils up on heating. 3/3 sees substantial softening of pack and loosening of draw (see: rolling in mitt). Delivers cool smooth smoke to the nub, ne'ertheless.

combustion
k a p l o w I t z
There is an abundance of tightly packed tobacco for the burn to pace its way through. Does so quite slowly and evenly. Exceptionally even burn-line, and razor-thin. Ash is white with silver flecks where tooth once were. Covers a surprising hot orange burn. Smoke-out-put is fairly calm, though picks up well 'nuff on puff. Room-note left behind is a leathery earth spiced thing. A slight conical tendency to burn in 3/3.

flavors
k a p l o W i t z
Oak and cedar, each sweetly spiced. Leather in a meaty manner. Mixed nuts, toasted. Thems the primaries. Sans an abundance of great division, middlings are browned not burnt salted butter. Pepper whispers in white and black. Buckwheat honey with its malt meanderings. Herbs. Thin yellow/orange to red fruit notes. Papaya... banana pudding in the the mounting cream bits. Vastly earthen under-belly which drives the profile. Earth itself is a simple bittersweet note, but drawing complexities from many other notes. At the top of 2/3, espresso comes in richly. Peppers whisper even softer. Spices rise up from mere vibes in 1/3. Cumin. Paprika. Mid-point is a new chocolate soda clear to the end.

body
k a p l o w I t z
A bit a' refined gruffness. A good bit muscular. Meaty cream, tho shy of chew. Hefty tongue-tingle from a spiced tobacco source, not peppery per se. Excellent moisture level in smoke-hole. Finish is bittersweet ripeness of long-legg'd-ness.

strength
k a p l O w i t z
Good and decent zetz of nicotine. Swimmy eyes and schvitz on the upper-lip. Nothing in chest, but a bit of a warmth in challah-basket.

Shemp's Last Day for Feb. 25th 2017

B"H
February 25th 2017

Welcome to this Shemp's Last Day post. Each post, a review of recent events. Events within the scope of this blog's on-going homage or perchance ode to Shemp's Last Day (SLD).

November 22nd 1955

Shemp (Samuel Horwitz) of The Three Stooges fame, went to see the horses run during the day. At night, he went to the fights. Afterward, he sat in the backseat of a cab with his pals, telling jokes and smoking a cigar. As he did he quietly, suddenly, croaked. Easily. After a life-long battle with phobia and assorted tsuris.

What a way to go, gentlepersons.
& away we go, gentlepersons.
HORSE RACING
Winx Moves Win Streak to 15
February 25, 2017 (AUS) -- G1 Chipping Norton Stakes -- Royal Randwick.
Prefers a heavy track? Seemingly so. Invincible? Seemingly so. Didn't I just write about a Winx win a week-ago? Winx, the five year-old Aussie phenom ran to an easy 15th straight triumph under jock Mr. Hugh Bowman Friday (yesterday) night State-side/the year 2019 Australia. Mr. Bowman called the conditions fair, but not ideal. Trainer Mr. Chris Waller said, "I was cursing and swearing early in the day and I came extremely close to scratching her and it's very much a relief to see her win ... I knew the track was safe, which was the most important thing ... She's unbelievable."

Believable is how the champion filly came wide on the turn to move up on then no-slouch leader Lasqueti Spirit in the straight to win by two lengths. Slightly less believable is how easily she ran. It's a wonderful thing this Mr. Bowman is a relaxed sort -- because it looked a lot like she just took him for a calm Sunday drive. One which required no forcing, so none is what he gave. Unbelievable, is exactly how easily she done doth did run. In a nigh mundane manner.

One of my favorite ladies is the great Zenyatta. Talk about a sharp flair for, well, flair. To my eyes laid on a TV screen beamed from the other side of the world -- Winx seems not to have that "it" factor... outside of the track of course. She almost seems simple. The "Keep swimming, keep swimming..." character from that one flick. She simply just simply does. So unbelievably so as to cause a yawn to be stifled -- even as she warrants a reminder set on many a horse fan's Zenith. Unbelievably believable, lettuce say, Winx.

The mile-long down-poured upon Down Under race was won in a time of 1:40.37. Lasqueti Spirit finished second. Who Shot the Barman came in third.
BOXING
Wilder Wins Over Washington TKO 5
February 25, 2017 -- Legacy Arena -- Birmingham, AL
Mr. Deontay Wilder (38-0-037) still with the loopty-loo hiccup on bringing back of punches. Still with the wide carried elbows -- defeated relative unknown big guy Mr. Gerald Washington (18-1-112) by technical knock-out a scant few moments prior to this SLD going to press. I am the last one to say any stoppage is early, but I was at first, tempted to do-so herein. Mr. Mike Griffin, the third man in the ring, looked to be looking keenly for an opportunity to step in and end the night in favor of the perennial 'Bama home-town WBC Heavyweight defending champ.

Mr. Washington showed a simple game-plan of nice jab, employing said tact to move Wilder back as dead people vote Democrat -- early and often. He simply looked the more powerful of the two; Wilder even closing his eyes in a flinch when Washington threw a punch hither and thither. Till, of course, the undeniable hay-maker by Wilder which floored his game 'nuff adversary. Then a staggered stepping in response to a series of follow-up hay-makers. The end coming at the 1:45 mark. In all reality, could Washington have recovered? No. Thusly, all told, good stoppage.

Was this bit of pugilistic display all about Washington's skill or Wilder's patience? Hard to say, but some a' each is generally a sharp answer. It is Wilder's modus operandi to start slow, feeling an opponent out. I have said prior what I will say now: Mr. Wilder is the lesser of the forefront heavyweights which currently come to mind.

I had it scored 40-36 to Washington, at time of cited hay-maker. This was Wilder's 5th defense of the strap.

CIGARS
Manuel Quesada Celebrates His 70th
"My uncle has dedicated his life to cigars and all of us at Quesada cannot express in words how proud we are of him," Terence Reilly of Quesada Cigars told Cigar Aficionado. "Whether you know him well or have never met him personally, smoking the [Manuel Quesada 70th] gives the aficionado an opportunity to connect with Manuel through the taste and flavor of this blend. It truly exemplifies his palate."

As well as it should, seeing as though Mr. Manuel hisself doth blended the offering in... his own honor. I can totally relate -- I oft like my own Facebook status updates. As to the blend itself, mum's the word on all that thus far. Vitolas are sir's own personal favorites: A Belicoso and Toro. One-thousand ten-count boxes each, with a price tag of $12.95 per stogie. They are set to march in March.

18 Sabbaths - Jas Sum Kral Red Knight - 13th Sabbath

B"H
THE CIGAR
Jas Sum Kral Red Knight
5 x 50 Robusto
Closed-foot, Pig-tailed
w. Ecuadorian Habano
b. Mexican San Andres & Jalapa Seco
f. Undisclosed

Check out my initial write-up and talkie re: this JSK offering HERE.
This is Serie II of my 18 Sabbaths project. Please read all about it HERE.
What you'll be reading below is a point/counter-point to a KVETCH/KVELL looksie I took at his blend HERE on 1/13/17. I have moved the notes therein to herein and shall address as seen...
THE KVELL
Regally rustic over-all appearance. POINT (as in check, as is samsies).
Minimal veins. Good dose a' tooth. POINT.
Seams hold well gate-to-wire. POINT.
Smooth medium tension'd even draw. POINT.
No hard/soft spots in medium+ pack. POINT.
Burnt offering reach a pale complected easy inch. COUNTER-POINT. More dumping.
Thin burn-line. COUNTER-POINT. A tick wider.
Clearly delineated and full flavors. COUNTER-POINT. Ful flavored, though linear.
Verily nuanced. COUNTER-POINT. Flatter, some.
Richly full-bodied and cleanly so at end. POINT.
Bittersweet and long legg'd finish with complexities. COUNTER-POINT lesser complexities.
Room-note is pungent yet kind. POINT.
Zilch acidic or sour (per se) nor bitey tendencies. POINT.
Nicely umami. COUNTER POINT more-so.
Smooth textured delivery of weighty heighty profile. POINT

THE KVETCH
Some light flaking of ash. COUNTER POINT more-so.
Burn-line has a slight ribbon. POINT.
Transitions with a bit of a jerk. COUNTER-POINT no transitions.
A tick outta balance with strength and backbone lurching. COUNTER-POINT better balance.
Draw complexities could be more-so. POINT.
A lightweight (me) might feel uncomfortably drunk come 3/3. COUNTER-POINT less strength.

THE KIBBITZ
More chocolate, less pepper spices and strength. No familiar cherry. Calmer, over-all. A bit of a linear sleepy lull in the aging process? If so, a common occurrence in cigars -- not to be held against it, per se. Still quite enjoyable of an offering.

EDITOR'S NOTE
While posted on the Sabbath, this is an automatically generated thing, gentlepersons. These are not written during the Sabbath, but typically on a Friday noon-ish. Shabbot shalom and Gut Shabbos -- and to the goyim: hey, have a heckuva Saturday!

THE VIDEO

THE GIST
Cuban coffee and center-cut a' brownie. Dark grains and black walnuts, sweetly. Exotic spices, pale. White pepper with a soft black addition on retro-hale. Dark fruit syrups-cum-sweet wine. Meaty leather and manure compost under-belly. Ripe natural tobacco. Heavy floral bits. Nougat. Mango? Dr. Pepper? Fennel to licorice. Construction is excellent, combustion very good. Medium-full flavors, ditto body on a sweet then tangy cream via earthen transition of that ilk. Smooth and cool texture. Strength is a medium varietal offering a slight swimming of eyes. Verily an exceptionally nuanced offering. Quite complex due to shiftings within them nuances.

Felix Assouline Cuban Style Blend (CSB) - Cigar Review

B"H
THE CIGAR
Felix Assouline
CSB Cuban Style Blend
Torero 6 x 52 Toro
w. Jalapa Habano Criollo 98
b./f. Jamastran
m. Nicaragua
K A P L O W I T Z SCALE
Construction
k a p L o w i t z
Darkly hued shaft with some high-up brick-red under-tones. Decent sheen which thickens as smoke progresses. Veiny, a good bit. Neat-O tooth. Seams present unevenly at pre-light, but hold throughout and mayhaps even tighten. Medium+ density of pack down-grades to a medium after 1/3 tho that don't alter draw particularly. Draw is a tick wispy/hollow at times on first toke. Likes to be puffed at in threes. Like much/most/all of the Assouline line, these CSB offerings mandate a good dry-boxing.

Combustion
k a p L o w i t z
Resting smoke out-put fades quickly to a quite quiet burn; once pulled -- voluminous thick clouds emerge and create a sweet leathery room-note with hint of spice. Verily earthy. Pace quickens here and there a tick unevenly so, is never slower than an above average rate of speed. Ash is medium-dark grey with some flaking off a chunked build. Looking head-long into char, an aeration of burn can be seen. Burn-line wobbles-some, but self-corrects quickly off a quickly burn. .

Flavor
k a p l o W i t z
Dark earthen toasted grains. Sweetened by goodly molasses doses. Middlings revolve around an espresso-drenched dark roasted natural tobacco with a heavy smoked attachment. Lower middlings are a bissell zetz of toasted caramel. Under-belly is a scorched compost manure thing of great richness and nuance. Spices are cumin and paprika, mainly. Red pepper flakes play well inside the spices. Leather laces the profile and leaves thickish oils in its wake. Mid-point transition sees the addition of a shouting dark cocoa and whispering dried red/purple fruits. Retro-hale offers up black pepper and a toasted nuttiness. In the 3/3, there is a drying nigh scorching of profile seemingly from grains... not egregiously-so, but worthy of note.

Body
k a p l o W i t z
Sits a bit dry on the palate. Spiced earth and espresso bean finish of medium-length'd legs. Warm tingling on tongue. Oils, but powdery on cheeks, a bit of scorched feel. A half-tick coarse of texture.

Strength
k a p l o W i t z
Challah-basket warms like eating a heaping bowl of hot porridge. Head swims a tick and a half, but lending to that may be the amount of puffs needed on each draw in order to satiate smoke-hole and keep the CSB lit. My upper lip doth schvitz in the 3/3.

Gun Runner Romps in Razorback

B"H
February 20, 2017 -- Oaklawn Park -- $500K G3 Razorback Hcp.

It was a gate-to-wire President's Day for Gun Runner, culminating in a 5 3/4 length thumping of field at this year's Razorback. Nary a trace of ring-rust was seen in the sheen of the free at last, free at last seemingly from a forever and a day Louisianan herpesvirus-1 quarantined Steve Asmussen charge. Whenst last we saw the four year-old son of Candy Ride, he was winning the G1 Clark back in November's end with jock Mr. Florent Geroux aboard then as now.

"This horse just gets better and better,” Geroux said to Blood Horse. "He was in every fight last year and he feels even better this year. I’m hoping the sky’s the limit for him."

Off to the races as a 1-5 favorite of the over-matched field of six, he was sent up front by Mr. Geroux to ne'er look back, even whilest Blue Tone stalked or tried to -- in an opening quarter of 23.18. At a half-mile ran in 46:88, the colt was well on his way then, to dominating. Doing away with the opposition in a final time of 1:40.97 for the 1 1/16 miler. A scant two-fifths of a second off Lost Code’s stakes record in '88 whenst the Razorback was a G2 go. Gun Runner was followed to the line by Hawaakom and Domain's Rap.

The Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys owned Gun Runner seems mayhaps or perchance on course for the G1 Dubai World Cup come late March. Could he provide stiffer opposition for Arrogate than doth done did California Chrome at the Breeders' Cup Classic and then Pegasus World Cup? May-be, gentlepersons.

Broner v Granados: A Boxing Retrospective

B"H
February 19, 2017. Cintas Center, Cincinnati, OH.

The late-starting Mr. Adrien Broner (32-2-0-24) didn't much deviate from that, his modus operandi, whenst taking on Mr. Adrian Granados (18-5-2-12), a current pal and former sparring partner of his, this past week-end. A low hanging lead left by Broner, left himself susceptible to Granados rights early on and lesser hither and thither later on. He doth done did counter well from his back foot, but not overly well till a few rounds in. What helped this was a Granados, who stopped controlling the distance twixt 'em as well as he once had, and by too, leading with his head instead of jabs or straight rights.

Once inside, leather was landed by each participant, tho Broner's hands at times looked surprisingly slower. Some excellent combos were fired by Granados, and not overly oft answered by a Broner counter. Albeit there was the occasional flash of brilliance Broner is known for -- it was generally followed by his other renown attribute of taking some 60 seconds off per round. All told, Granados was the busier fighter, pressing an adversary whom don't respond well to being pressed by stalking his man in a mainly straight line forward manner. Broner's un-vaulted footwork prevailed more oft than not, humsoever. His flat-footed tendencies showing, but not being shown-up quite 'nuff.

There was no robbery, as so many fight fans are fast to scream of these days -- simply a fight that coulda been conclusively called either way, dependant upon what judges were looking for and/or at. The take-away from this rather entertaining bit a' fisticuffs is that a fight don't need to be fought superbly to wow. More specifically to each participant, Adrien Broner seemed his normal self, although somewhat smallish for 147. Too, to my eyes, whilst garnering the W via 10 round Split Decision, he doesn't have a lot of upward options, as 140 seems a thing of the past. Adrian Granados, on the other gloved hand, performed admirably if not in a rudimentary fashion, but also seemed to be learning on the job. Whereas Broner is roundly disliked due to his brashness and protected bringing-along -- Granados hath some markings of a self-made pugilist. A hard-worker with a hard-fought upside... sans hype or ease.

Before Broner's hometown, judges saw the fight 96-94 and 97-93 in favor of he. The third saw it for Granados, 97-93. Personally, I scored it 96-94 for Broner -- although no one asked.
