Felix Assouline Cigars EGO Black "Dark Lord" - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"BOO!!!"

Felix Assouline Cigars Ego Black
WRAPPER: Honduran Ligero
BINDER: Honduran
FILLER: Honduran

FORMAT: 6.5x56 double perfecto,box pressed
ORIGIN: Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Full

NOTES: Dark is right. Powerful as all get-out, too. Yet somehow smooth. Roasted bittersweet notes of espresso and dark chocolate. Stiff spine of pepper-spice woods eventually softening some via leathery oils. Beef jerky savory and is that manure I detect? Dense composted earthen core. Straight-forward but with superb depth & nuance. Performs exceptionally.

FINAL GRADE: A-

Pier 28 Maduro "Dark but not somber overtones of a roasted bittersweet varietal. Pepper-spice is a rather simplistic bit which cycles up&down hither&thither throughout the profile. Not much by way of sour entrants and lesser in terms of savoriness, which is led along by a toasted salted note. Not too terribly balanced and rather lacking in complexities. Very straight-forward. Nuance is lacking as well, in a failure to "stick to the ribs" manner and entrench itself in the palate."

CAO Extreme Bourbon was never topshelf stuff, but now it's a well drink and prominent in the profile. Top-leaf cracks off of a loosened seam about a half inch from burn-line. Astringent note is there. Witch hazel and cheap bourbon are big players.

Drew Estate Kentucky Fire Cured There is a pungent cold-nosing of vulcanized rubber-sole leather boots being set afire over seasoned woods. Said fire is then doused by liquid smoke flavoring, which caramelizes in the heat. Interesting!

La Aurora Cigars ADN Dominicano in Robusto - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

La Aurora ADN Dominicano
WRAPPER: Dominican
BINDER: Cameroon
FILLER: Dominican Republic, Pennsylvania & Nicaragua

FORMAT: Robusto
ORIGIN: La Aurora Cigar Factory, DR
STRENGTH: Medium

NOTES: Sweet via ZERO bar* with a tangy warmly spiced kicker which balances well. Some sharp white pepper extends from there to growing finish. Cream. Vanilla bean. Savory oils mount. Coffee dark roasted but still more sweet than bitter w/ a bunch of raw sugar additions. Could be smoother, could be rounder. Performance is excellent, particularly draw & burn-line.

*"The ZERO candy bar, introduced in 1920, is a candy bar composed of a combination of caramel, peanut and almond nougat covered with a layer of white fudge (a.k.a. white chocolate fudge). Its outwardly white color, an unusual color for a candy bar, has become its trademark." - Wikipedia

FINAL GRADE: B
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

"During this year’s Procigar, La Aurora showed off a brand new line named ADN Dominicano, which translates into Dominican DNA from Spanish.

"While the majority of La Aurora cigars are produced with tobacco that is grown using traditional techniques, the ADN Dominicano is quite different, as it incorporates andullo tobacco which refers to a unique way of processing the leaves. Instead of being harvested and placed in pilones—basically extremely large piles of tobacco that are rotated in and out as the leaves process—as is the case for most cigars, andullo tobacco is wrapped into large pods known as yaguas after being harvested. These pods are then rooted into the ground while the tobacco processes." - www.Halfwheel.com (2017)

"A year ago, at the 2017 Procigar festival, La Aurora debuted what was to be a Dominican exclusive cigar called ADN Dominicana. Luckily for us, these became available to the U.S. last September, and enthusiasts can discover a new/old style of tobacco called Andullo.

'La Aurora ADN Dominicano is the latest release of La Aurora, a cigar with an exceptional blend whose soul is the Andullo. Using this type of tobacco, La Aurora pays tribute to the oldest Dominican tobacco process and although little known today is deeply ingrained as an essential part of the Dominican Republic’s tobacco culture and its processing practices for hundreds of years.'" - www.CigarDojo.com (2018)

"Historically, lectors (known as lectores in Cuba) or readers in a cigar factory entertained workers by reading books or newspapers aloud, often left-wing publications, paid for by unions or by workers pooling their money. In the United States, the custom was brought to an end in the Tampa cigar makers' strike of 1931. The practice apparently originated in Cuba, and is still known there today, where there are about 200 lectores. Lectores were introduced in 1865 to educate and relieve boredom among cigar workers. Lectores, and their reading material, are chosen by the workers of the cigar factory. Lectores often take on extra-official roles and formerly acted as “spurs to dissent.” As of 2017, UNESCO is considering designating the profession a form of “intangible cultural heritage” - Wikipedia

Felix Assouline Cigars IISaints Platinum Joie De Vivre - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Why not Kaplowitz?"

Felix Assouline 2Saints Platinum
WRAPPER: Nicaraguan Habano Criollo '98
BINDER: Nicaraguan
FILLER: Nicaraguan

FORMAT: Toro Gordo "Joie De Vivre"
ORIGIN: Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Full

NOTES: Black pepper'd wood & smoked meat overtones. Salted dark chocolate undertones. Dark and dry then oiled by stiff leather. Purposeful and powerful, yet nuanced & particularly complex on the long-legg'd umami finish. Burns even & draws smooth; smokes maybe a tick toward quick in first half, then slows as leather softens/richens even its very shaft. Even its very shaft. Its very shaft.

FINAL GRADE: A-

Kaplowitz Media: Cigars of the Month (October 2018)

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

"Sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit, these men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem. If no one else can help. And if you can find them -- maybe you can hire the A-Team."

Gentlepersons below is a list as shallow and pedantic as Lois Griffin's meatloaf. It is a list of recent (October 2018) cigar offerings I humbly found to be worthy of A (- to +) review ratings.

Kaplowitz Media Best of the B Grades, or Cigars Which Fell Shy of an A Grade but that are Still Really Very Good & Well-Worth a Try

& fuck if the title of the post don't say it all.

[in no particular order]

[titles are links to full reviews, as the below are merely excerpts. thx]

Cala Cigars Gran Reserva A Robusto of jenky cosmetics, goodly mechanics, though dampening draw. Bright citrusy sour notes balanced cedar piquancy. A fusty natural tobacco drives as cocoa whispers.

San Lotano Oval The band brings to mind either a Vaquero’s belt buckle or a topshelf can of very authentically eye-talian tomato paste. I will give it a passing grade on this much: it is embossed and it is thick.

Caldwell Cigar Co. Murcias Especial Toasting the foot is a dance of leather and raisin led dried fruits. Some red pepper flakes. First hot pull is a stiff leather plate of raisins and dried cranberries.

Camacho Imperial Stout Barrel-Aged Veiny and not too tightly wound -- a lot like moi. It doth burn cleanly tough, and tightens up-on progression. Dense silvery ash. Retro-hale is a schnoz fulla wasps. Notes of Dark chocolate and fruit syrup with heavy peppercorn.

Man O' War Virtue Put yer toaster on low, insert Texas toast, slather with oleo. Sweet driving under-belly of caramel, light then thickening honey, yellow flowers. Hint of cardamon, dash of cinnamon sugar, and underneath that, a stewed green apple.

Illusione Rothchildes A rematch hath already been mentioned and too, seems begged. I just don't see it ending differently, lest a puncher's chance which dwindles by the quickening tick.

Xiphos NR Maduro "... Curly’s interest in show business grew as he watched his brothers, Shemp and Moe perform as stooges in Ted Healy’s act. After Shemp left the Healy act, Moe suggested to Healy that his kid brother Jerome was available and would make an excellent replacement for Shemp."

Ave Maria Immaculata Pale nuts mount -- which, gentlepersons, is how white babies are made. <rim-shot> Green nigh bite is subsiding. Artisan white bread is toasting. Cedar is getting at once more creamy and more roasted.

DAV Cigars Mestizo Stiffly-purposeful notes: peppery hardwood, coffee beans 'round charred earthen core. Slightly salted/sweet dried-savory far-undertones.

Felix Assouline Ringo Bullet A beautifully constructed, nice 'nuff performing box-pressed Robusto, bulging of richly black peppered roasted dark earth. Rather on a line, nuanced slightly by espresso woodiness.

La Aurora Preferidos Diamond in Robusto - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Why not Kaplowitz?"

La Aurora Preferidos Diamond
WRAPPER: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
BINDER: Dominican
FILLER: Dominican

FORMAT: Robusto
ORIGIN: La Aurora Factory, DR
STRENGTH: Medium-Full
BLENDER: Guillermo Leon

NOTES: Earth, dark & roasted to the brink of charred. Mocha braced by scorched oak barrel. Finely ground black pepper in table syrup. That's it, top-to-bottom. Also, straight-thru. Burns on an even 'nuff line; plenty of smoke out-put. Draws silky smooth, building to a ditto-so texture w/ just the slightest of buzz on tongue. Stays stubbornly well-formed to the tepid nubberino.

FINAL GRADE: B+
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

"Announced in April and introduced at IPCPR 2012 in August, the La Aurora Preferidos Diamond is the latest expansion in the Preferidos line. Charlie posted the details of this back in July:

"La Aurora has confirmed its newest Preferido will be one with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The cigar, which will be known as Preferidos Diamond, will come in a black tubo and the signature 5 x 54 Preferidos No. 2 vitola. Nestor Miranda, head of Miami Cigar & Co., the U.S. distributor for La Aurora, first announced the new extension in early April." - www.Halfwheel.com (2012)

Felix Assouline Cigars EGO Ocean Blue "Monsoon" (Toro) - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

Felix Assouline EGO Ocean Blue
WRAPPER: Nicaraguan Habano 98
BINDER: Nicaraguan
FILLER: Nicaraguan

FORMAT: Toro "Monsoon"
ORIGIN: Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: Hits outta the gate like a bolder Padron. Wood and nuts but coarser and more black pepper. Edgy not sharp and well fleshed-out. Balanced. Black pepper pulls back then nigh out & in come leathery oils with a lavender/lilac lilt on their own white peppercorn undertone. Softens more, grows richer with well lit earthiness in an overall darkly roasted blend. Performs sans complaint.

Kaplowitz Media: Odds & Ends at the Ides (Oct.)

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

Odds & Ends at the Ides. Think of it as a State of the Blog | Podcast Address. I sometimes do. I also think of it as a great way to stay aboob of blog and podcast happenings.

From Wikipedia: "Ides (calendar), a day in the Roman calendar that marked the approximate middle of the month. For March, May, July, and October it is the 15th day of the month. For other Roman calendar months it is on the 13th."
Gentlepersons,

Them's above are the bullet-points. Lettuce now delve -- but first -- thanks for coming out to this, my State of the Kaplowitz.xyz Address.

Via the K/M FB page I said:
"Here's something to look forward to at www.Kaplowitz.xyz ...

A very special #podcast series with myself of #KM & Felix of Felix Assouline Cigars which will take you step-by-step through the cigar-making process.

Kaplowitz Media Presents: From Seed to Cigar.

Look for Episode One next week, wherein we'll take it back even a step further and discuss growing regions.

Do NOT miss this series, Gentlepersons."

I can now tell you that the inaugural ep will drop here at the .xyz on Wed. Oct. 24 12:01am Pacific time. Wowie-wow-wow.

What is ASMR? Take it away, Wikipedia!: "Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is an experience characterized by a static-like or tingling sensation on the skin that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. It has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson."

Huh?

"The benefits of ASMR: Internet videos of individuals purposely simulating real-life ASMR triggers have grown widely popular in the last few years. Viewers find many of these videos as relaxing as real-life ASMR triggers and quite helpful for falling asleep, de-stressing, and providing comfort during a sad time. Some individuals with clinical diagnoses of medical disorders report that these videos are helpful to their insomnia, anxiety, panic disorders and/or depression. The evidence for the potential benefit of ASMR for stress disorders, sleep disorders, mood disorders and more is slowly growing. Unfortunately, there is still a lot to learn about the physiology of ASMR and the true effectiveness of ASMR for medical disorders. That is why the mission of this website is to promote the awareness, understanding, and research of ASMR." - www.ASMRuniversity.com

Right.

So a lot of feedback is sent my way re: the tone and pace of my voice. People tend to apologetically state that it helps them unwind, even sleep. This is accidental on my part (mostly) but not at all unwelcome. Look... cigars are about luxuriating. You can't luxuriate when yer sphincter is puckered tighter than a witch's cunt. Go ahead. Chillax. Sleep, even. Your plays, ultimately, count as well as awake ones tbh & anyways.

Finally & w/ again thanks of the B I G varietal to my new sponsors named up-top, ENTER TO WIN THE CONTEST FOR FREE CIGARS AND HAT (link).

thx

Till the Ides next,

Kap

Illusione Cigars f9 Finesse - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

Illusione f9
WRAPPER: Nicaraguan
BINDER: Nicaraguan
FILLER: Nicaraguan

FORMAT: Lonsdale
ORIGIN: Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: A lively pepper-spice front yields to rich bright overtones of almond butter in leathery oils; churned out from a densely sweet tobacco core. (Run on sentence, sentence run on.) Exotic spiced floral bits lightly roast in the high & front undertones. Construction is primo and features a great draw & hand-feel. Combustion is excellent and the room-note is a delicate and intricate thing, much like myself. Too like moi, the f9 is ornately complex and really just all round pretty.

Tabac Cigar Co. Muestra de Tabac Double Claro Habano Perfecto - Redux Review by Kaplowitz

"Why not Kaplowitz?"

Tabac Cigar Co. Double Claro Habano
WRAPPER: Double Claro (Candela)/Ecuadorian Habano
BINDER: San Andres Broadleaf
FILLER: Nicaraguan

FORMAT: Perfecto 660*
ORIGIN: La Perla Fabrica
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

*The Double Claro Habano is a double-footed, pre-cut affair in which the Candela & Habano top-leaves meet in the 50/50 middle. Quite different, that. As a note to both myself & you Gentlepersons, these come in 2-packs... I smoked this one with the Habano half in my smoke-hole. I'll be reviewing the 2nd the other way around & shortly.

With Habano-filled smoke-hole I wrote:
NOTES: Smoky & heavily roasted-charred notes of rich sweet earth & bracing peppery woods. Espresso/dark chocolate overtones. Licorice lilts in leathery oil undertones/body. Candela burn-line needs tending, ash splits there. Habano performance smooths. Draws easy.

Now & with Habano lit:
NOTES: Less smoky roasted-charred bits, though rich sweet earth drives minus bracing woods. Diner joe and semi-sweet chocolate advance out-front, heavy on vanilla addition. Sweetness is a creamy smooth floral honey. Bracing is done via finely-ground white pepper. Anise and cardamom underneath it all. A better performance here, but a re-touch is mandated as the line crosses onto green. Great draw.

Hereupon Candela in smoke-hole redux, the experience is a more muted and comfortably sweet one. Less brilliant, more meditative.
