THE CIGAR
Man O' War Virtue
5 x 50 Robusto
w. Ecuadorian Connecticut
b./f. Nicaraguan
Tabacalera, Nicaragua
(AJ Fernandez)
Construction
k a p l o w I t z
Tight seams and minimal veins. Sturdy cap. Shoulder holds. Not packed hard, but is still dense with a hefty lil hand-feel which holds fast as doth shoulder. Smooth shaft, oils work up as smoke progresses. Smooth draw with just a tick of on-par tension.

Combustion
k a p l o W i t z
Plenty of even-keeled smoke out-put off each end. Ash is dense heather-grey ladder-rungs with a surprise bit of tooth unseen on top-leaf. Sans flaking. Dumps a tick more freely in second half, darkens a shade therein. Burn-line is even, but shy of being so in a razor-manner. Excellently paced. Evenly lit twixt filler/binder/wrapper. Heats up a tick at nub.

Flavors
k a p l O w i t z
Peanut brittle. Primarily white pepper with a buttery pale spice accompaniment and oak. Close under sweetly acidic earth and oily sweet natural tobacco. Put yer toaster on low, insert Texas toast, slather with oleo. Sweet driving under-belly of caramel, light then thickening honey, yellow flowers. Hint of cardamon, dash of cinnamon sugar, and underneath that, a stewed green apple.

Body
k a p l O w i t z
Cream and suede, salted and with a gooey caramel lilt to the surprisingly robust medium-legged finish. Cream mounts throughout. Mouth-feel is rich and moisture level is damp side of average, but well nice. Delivered smoothly; ends cleanly.

Strength
k a p L o w i t z
A light-sided medium. A bit more of a zetz than the usual CT.

FINAL GRADE
****B+****
(HORSE RACING) Midnight Storm Dominates on Dirt Return. By 7 3/4 lengths, to be exact, in the GrIII Native Diver Stakes. Gate-to-wire, gentlepersons. I did sayeth "dominate," no? The five year-old from Pioneerof the Nile covered nine Del Mar furlongs in 1:51.59 -- off his recent turf setting wherest last out was an impressive show finish in the Breeders' Cup Mile, following a win at the GrII Del Mar Hcp.

“Phil (trainer, D'Amato) didn't tell me anything,” Smith said. “He just said if he likes it (off track), you'll have some fun. He looked to be the only speed and I caught a flyer coming away from there. He was going so easy; I never moved my hands. He was looking around, so I knew he was happy. Then when I asked him to do some running, he did it. Very impressive.”

Mike Smith, HOF jock, was a late replacement for MS's scheduled rider of Flavien Prat, who was escorted to the hospital earlier in the card coming off a spill.
