Diamondbacks Out-last Rockies: An NL Wild-card Retrospective

The Arizona Diamondbacks won the win-and-yer-in, one-and-done wild-card game against the never-say-die Colorado Rockies. The final score was 11-8, but the game played much smarter than that. It was a game of long-ball, rally-ball, small-ball, and apparently hyphenations. It had it all. Two boxer-punchers going at it for 12 full rounds. Dem Bums of LA now await the Dbacks in the NLDS. Arizona is one a' them teams that I can't see losing thrice in a series. The Dodgers are rather unfreshly-freshly off a schneid to remember. We shall see.

Through the first three frames, the Dbacks stood tall, up 6-0 o'er the Rockies. This all ignited by first stanza fire-works, when starter Jon Gray surrendered five-hits outta the gate, including a three-run big-fly by Paul Goldschmidt. In contrast, Zach Greinke looked golden. Then the Colorado squad scored five unanswered runs off he, four of which in the fourth. That's when I noticed Bud Black had the face on of someone about to walk barefoot across the floor of a Lego brick strewn room. Then things really got exciting and quite unpredictable.

Archie Bradley, he of a career .098 batting average, split the gap for a two-run triple-bagger for a bottom of the seventh 8-5 cushion. The next frame, he took to the rubber and gave up back-to-back jacks, Jack. The first to Nolan Arenado and then to Trevor Story. 8-7.

Then 'twas time for the Dback response frame and yet another triple, this one by Pollack and good for two tallies. 10-7. Then Mathis laid down a pretty, pretty bunt to bring Pollack home. 11-7. At this point, I was calmed, but the IBS had already kicked in. Also, I ran out for bread and cottage cheese at some point. Although, I could not secure said cottage cheese as my local Albertsons has an atrocious floor plan.

Also at a certain point, the league-wide noted slugger Blackmon, laid down a bunt to bring home a run. Then a pig flew by my window -- which made a lot more sense to me.

Of note, Greinke failed to last five innings even after his filfee start to the evening. This meant that the projected Game 1 NLDS starter Robbie Ray had to make an appearance last night to settle things down. Deck: shuffled. Ray was good, to the tune of a single earned-run, but hurled 34 pitches in being-so. So whom starts against the Dodgers? Such are the woes rightfully dealt a wild-card club. They now head to H-wood in hopes of returning to the Senior Circuit Championship for the first time since 2007. As ya gentlepersons know, I like their chances.
