Thompson Cigars Tits Up in Tampa | Cigar News by Kaplowitz

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

"SCANDINAVIAN TOBACCO GROUP, THOMPSON

"Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) has 'entered an agreement to acquire' Thompson and Co. (catalog retail biggie) for a cool $62M. Thompson boasts net sales of over $100M and 185 employees. STG, in turn, is the momma co. of some Mom & Pop operation named General Cigar Company. Ya may've heard of them.

This deal includes all of Thompson's retail sites and stores, their Tampa call center, and many shop exclusive blends."

Now, one of the oldest/biggest cigar retailers in the USofA is set to 'mostly' shut down its stateside stuff come June 29. In total, 112 jobs will be lost.

'Mostly' -- the B&M within the company's HQ will remain open-endedly open. President of Cigars International, Craig Reynolds, seems non-commital re: timelines there. He also declined to comment on rumors of CI opening two stores in the Tampa area. Due to open by the end of the year is a Ft. Worth locale.

3/28 EDIT: "From the very beginning, we have been transparent with the Thompson employees,” Craig Reynolds, executive vice president of STG and president of Cigars International, told Cigar Aficionado. “When we acquired Thompson last year, we made it clear we would be transitioning the business to the Pennsylvania office."
