Felix Assouline Cigars EGO White HEX (Toro) - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

Felix Assouline EGO White
WRAPPER: Nicaraguan Criollo '98 (Jalapa)
BINDER: Indonesian
FILLER: Nicaraguan (Jalapa)

FORMAT: Toro "HEX"
ORIGIN: Nicaraguan
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: Toasted cedar/hickory woodsiness with growing via progression dark chocolate overtones & roasty-toasty sweet cream. Espresso bean led undertones; well-rounded and smooth black peppery nice zetz. Some black walnut, anise, and topsoil hither and thither. Nice construction & combustion. Good draw and even 'nuff line, although burn is a tick quick. Solid if not dry ash.

FINAL GRADE: A-
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

"Felix Assouline EGO White The lone line that the company announced prior to the show, the EGO White builds on the company’s existing EGO and EGO Connecticut lines with a new blend that uses a wrapper grown on Assouline’s Omega Tobaccos farm in Nicaragua’s Jalapa region. The company announced four vitolas in early July—Divine, Magic, HEX and Taboo—with plans for a total of nine sizes, all of which were included on the order forms at the show. While it’s a regular production offering, the company is staggering production to an every other year basis, meaning that once the 2018 production is depleted, it won’t go back into production until 2020." www.Halfwheel.com (2018)

#GivingTuesday

"Why not Kaplowitz?"

"To all our readers in the U.S. world, It's a little awkward, so we'll get straight to the point: This Tuesday morning, we humbly ask you to protect Wikipedia's K/M's independence. We depend on donations averaging about $16.36, but 99% of our readers don't give. If everyone reading this gave $3, we could keep Wikipedia K/M thriving for years to come. The price of your Tuesday coffee is all we need. When we made Wikipedia a non-profit, people warned us we'd regret it. But if Wikipedia K/M became commercial [loves its advertisers], it would be a great loss to the world. Wikipedia K/M is a place to learn, not a place for advertising [& loves its advertisers]. It unites all of us who love knowledge: contributors, readers and the donors who keep us thriving. The heart and soul of Wikipedia K/M is a community of people working to bring you unlimited access to reliable, neutral information me, & I could use yer help. Please take a minute to help us keep Wikipedia K/M growing. Thank you."

"I ask only once a year: please help the Internet Archive K/M today. Most can’t afford to give, but we hope you can. The average donation is $45. If everyone chips in $5, we can end this fundraiser today. Right now, a generous supporter will match your donation, so you can double your impact. All we need is the price of a paperback book to sustain a library you can trust. We have only 150 staff me but run one of the world’s top websites [the voice of the cigar world]. We’re dedicated to reader privacy so we never track you. We never accept ads [I love my advertisers]. But we still need to pay for servers and staff [bacon & coffee]. For 22 3 years, my dream has been to build the library of everything and make it available to everyone cigars and the cigar lifestyle. To make information more reliable and permanent. I know we could charge money, but then we couldn’t achieve our mission: a free library for the whole internet. The Internet Archive is a bargain, but we need your help. If you find our site useful, please chip in. Thank you."

PLEASE DONATE TODAY: www.paypal.me/Kaplowitz In all seriousnss, K/M and myself could really use your help to keep going & to keep G R O W I N G. Don't hate, donate!

Why would you worry about essentially paying for a free to read blog and listen to podcast? Think of it as insurance that the KM cigar-centric infotainment you so love will continue to be there as you require. Or, maybe it’s just nice to say to me, "Hey Thanks." Any amount is welcome and will be graciously employed to keep the bills from being sent to K/M HQ on the scary pink paper.

La Aurora Preferidos Sapphire in Robusto - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

FILLER: Dominican, Cameroon(ian?), Brazilian

FORMAT: Robusto

NOTES: Sunlit earth and hay sweetened w/ toasted glimpses of butterscotch, vanilla bean, white chocolate, maybe car-a-mel. Whispery additions to that forward core are an orange blossom honey, toasted cream, pine nuts, and graham flour.

Dessert stick, though not cloyingly-so. Delivered on a line via a damply rigid draw though not nearly egregiously-so. Ash stacks tight af off razor-line slowly paced burn. Calming af. Pleasant if not gob-smacking af.

Kaplowitz Media: Cigars of the Month (November 2018)

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

"Sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit, these men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem. If no one else can help. And if you can find them -- maybe you can hire the A-Team."

Gentlepersons below is a list as shallow and pedantic as Lois Griffin's meatloaf. It is a list of recent (November 2018) cigar offerings I humbly found to be worthy of A (- to +) review ratings.

"Historically, lectors (known as lectores in Cuba) or readers in a cigar factory entertained workers by reading books or newspapers aloud, often left-wing publications, paid for by unions or by workers pooling their money. In the United States, the custom was brought to an end in the Tampa cigar makers' strike of 1931. The practice apparently originated in Cuba, and is still known there today, where there are about 200 lectores. Lectores were introduced in 1865 to educate and relieve boredom among cigar workers. Lectores, and their reading material, are chosen by the workers of the cigar factory. Lectores often take on extra-official roles and formerly acted as “spurs to dissent.” As of 2017, UNESCO is considering designating the profession a form of “intangible cultural heritage” - Wikipedia

"In modern English, the term cult has come to usually refer to a social group defined by its religious, spiritual, or philosophical beliefs, or its common interest in a particular personality, object or goal. This sense of the term is controversial and it has divergent definitions in both popular culture and academia and it also has been an ongoing source of contention among scholars across several fields of study. In the sociological classifications of religious movements, a cult is a social group with socially deviant or novel beliefs and practices, although this is often unclear. Other researchers present a less-organized picture of cults, saying that they arise spontaneously around novel beliefs and practices. Groups said to be cults range in size from local groups with a few members to international organizations with millions." - Wikipedia (again)

"Humour (British English) or humor (American English; see spelling differences) is the tendency of experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), controlled human health and emotion." - Wikipedia (again, again)

"Any podcast could be a sleep podcast, after all, if the listener is tired enough, or the host’s voice tickles all the right parts of the brain needed to relax. But part of the charm of choices like Sleep With Me and Sleep With Silk are how much effort and care has been spent on audio meant to be ignored. They may have invented the most generous form of media: art designed for audiences to abandon." -www.TheRinger.com

Felix Assouline Cigars Ringo - Cigar Review Redux by Kaplowitz

"Only Kaplowitz."

Felix Assouline Ringo
WRAPPER: Habano Criollo '98
BINDER: Indonesian
FILLER: Nicaraguan, Honduran

FORMAT: 6.5x38 box-pressed "Colt"
ORIGIN: Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: Stiffly delivered notes of charred wine cask & spiced cedar grow out from dried compost. Black pepper, coffee bean, dry pumpernickel toast. Dark & purposeful yet delicate notes -- some left unplayed as in a Jazz concert. Linear, but that line is a string on Django Reinhardt's guitar. Off-center burn wobbles on a curve. Draw is somewhat hesitant at times. Top-leaf is delicate and crackles lightly/audibly-so. Finish is a rather long salted dark chocolate addition to overtones.

FINAL GRADE: B+
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

My first look-see @ this blend: "FELIX ASSOULINE RINGO BULLET: A beautifully constructed, nice 'nuff performing box-pressed Robusto, bulging of richly black peppered roasted dark earth. Rather on a line, nuanced slightly by espresso woodiness. FINAL GRADE: B+" - Me, Four Cigars Reviewed in 100 Words vol. VI

"A medium to full flavored cigar to savor. Ringo is a call to our Western heritage. Ringo Cigars blend the past with the rich flavors one can only achieve with blending and processing Tobaccos from many regions of the world. This results in a medium to full flavor cigar, which is then housed in a natural wood box. Along with our other vitolas, the Ringo Colt is an elegant and classic box press 6½ x 38 lonsdale that is pure pleasure to smoke." - www.FelixAssouline.com

Caldwell Cigar Co. The Last Tsar in Churchill - Cigar Review Redux by Kaplowitz

"Have you Kaplowitz'd to-day?"

Caldwell Last Tsar
WRAPPER: Hybrid Connecticut Arapiraca Maduro
BINDER: Undisclosed
FILLER: Undisclosed

FORMAT: Churchill Pig-tail
ORIGIN: Dominican Republic
STRENGTH: Medium

NOTES: Inherently sweet overtones w/ tangy traces. Car-a-mel, milk chocolate, toasted cream, diner loaded cup joe, Tang. Leathery tobacco-forward notes coming from a loosening thus further and further reaching core. Vegetal freshness in the undertones. A tingly trip to the produce section.

Heavy mid-point transition in which buttery cedar drives the rest home. Finish is a salted cashew butter of a moderate length thing. Burn jags a self-correcting tick, draw is a tick hesitant, liking to be double-puffed.

FINAL GRADE: B+
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

This is a redux (see title) See original review:
Caldwell Cigar Co. The Last Tsar - Cigar Review

Since 2015, Kaplowitz Media, with myself as its sole content creator, has been a cigar-centric internet oasis of quasi-intellectual reviews (an archive of ~600 in written & audio form as of June 2018) & educational information (infotainment). This proverbial plethora of infotainment is disseminated to Gentlepersons in some two dozen countries to the tune of a monthly readership I shall boast to you of privately IF YOU'D LIKE TO SPONSOR ME. All this via expertly researched and wonderfully written writings & perfectly produced podcasts.

Simply put, Kaplowitz Media has become somewhat of a trusted source w/ a growing cult following. K/M is steak. K/M is sizzle. Yet strangely, K/M is raw. #DIY & yet again & strangely too, quite beautiful and technically sound.

La Aurora Preferidos Ruby Maduro in Robusto - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Only Kaplowitz."

La Aurora Preferidos Ruby
WRAPPER: Brazilian Arapiraca Maduro
BINDER: Dominican
FILLER: Brazilian, Cameroon, Dominican

FORMAT: Robusto
ORIGIN: Dominican Republic
STRENGTH: Medium

NOTES: I'd say "pungent" overtones of peppercorn and baking chocolate ride on a sweet but sharp broasted 'baccy backbone. Meaty middlings see a boozy fruitcake addition. Some charred hardwood reaches up from the composted earth undertones. Finish is short end of moderate. Texture is smooth with some occasional sharp corners. Burns on a razor line and draws easily/evenly.

FINAL GRADE: B+

NOTES: Sweet spices toast warmly with pineapple mango attachments around a buttery cedar core. Leather in the nether overtop white pepper’d yeasty grains. Complex. Transitional. Nuanced. La Aurora Preferidos Gold Corojo in Toro - Cigar Review Redux by Kaplowitz

La Aurora Preferidos Gold
WRAPPER: Dominican Corojo
BINDER: Dominican
FILLER: Dominican, Cameroon, Brazilian

FORMAT: Toro (5.5x54)
ORIGIN: Dominican Republic
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: Fusty suede envelopes a syrupy fruit cup. Working out from that core is white peppercorn, honey malt and cocoa butter. Creamy smooth texture with a pleasant tingle. Finish is of nice length and sees a core extension, sweetened. Burns on a razor line and draws evenly if not somewhat stiffly (in the 1/3, only).

Black Label Trading Co. (BLTC) Cigars Bishops Blend 2018 - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Why not Kaplowitz?"

Black Label Trading Co. Bishops Blend (2018)
WRAPPER: Ecuadorian Habano Maduro
BINDER: Ecuadorian Habano
FILLER: Nicaraguan, Connecticut, PA Broadleaf

FORMAT: Corona Larga
ORIGIN: Fabrica Oveja Negra, Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: Overtones? Imagine sucking Coke Blak through a black Twizzlers straw. Riding shotgun to that imagery-slash-bullshit flavor note is a somewhat sharp black pepper'd hardwood with its own raisin/prune undertone. A rich dark earthen core grows via progression from roasted to nicely charred.

Finishes quite cleanly w/ a tingly extension of core notes, further sweetened. Performance-wise, the thick oily top-leaf shows a bit of forgivable & self-corrected jaggedness to burn-line. Draw is rigid but smooth.

FINAL GRADE: A-
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

"Black Label Trading Company (BLTC) has announced the third iteration of their limited/annual Bishops Blend cigar—set to ship to select retailers in late April 2018. ... Bishops Blend was first announced in June 2016 and was followed by a 2017 edition, with each release incorporating the same overall blend and sizes." - www.CigarDojo.com

"The Bishops Blend from Black Label Trading Company (BLTC) has become a highly anticipated annual release since it debuted three years ago. The 2018 release is sure to follow that same trend.

Back to Wikipedia: "Humour (British English) or humor (American English; see spelling differences) is the tendency of experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which taught that the balance of fluids in the human body, known as humours (Latin: humor, "body fluid"), controlled human health and emotion."

Felix Assouline Cigars EGO Gold Fortis Fortuna Juvat - Cigar Review by Kaplowitz

"Only Kaplowitz"

Felix Assouline Gold
WRAPPER: Nicaraguan Habano '98
BINDER: Nicaraguan Jalapa
FILLER: Honduras Jamastran, Nicaraguan Jalapa

FORMAT: Gordo
ORIGIN: Nicaragua
STRENGTH: Medium-Full

NOTES: Heavily toasted cedar & oak then coffee bean notes with a black pepper undertone which soothes to white on a lengthy finish. Finish sweetens via nougat & gets some vegetal oiliness. Draw remains crisply delivered, rigidly-so. Lots of toasted grains flesh out the profile with some nutty/fruity ebbing/flowing. Combustion wobbles & sees some issue w/ a mousehole threatening to turn runner, but abates after much finagling. Construction shows an at times hollow draw. Quite complex of an offering but hard to follow due to burn issues.

FINAL GRADE: B
A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F 0-59

K/M is affiliated in certain ways with Felix Assouline. Who's asking?

"Assouline’s plan for this year’s trade show was to focus on Nicaraguan puros, and while not completely the case, there are numerous Nicaraguan-dominant cigars on the list. Assouline said that many of them weren’t guaranteed to be at the show given the issues in Nicaragua at the moment, and it was only until Assouline himself went to his factory just over a week before the show that he was able to secure enough samples and feel confident to offer the new lines to retailers. Most of the lines won’t get full releases until September or the holiday season, but there a number of new products coming from the energetic Assouline." www.Halfwheel.com (2018)
